Husted, Ursula Murray. (2020). A Cat Story. Illus. by Ursula Murray Husted. Quill Tree Books. ISBN 9780062932051

PLOT SUMMARY

In this graphic novel, Ursula Murray Husted writes the story of a cat that is on the quest of searching

for a better place to live called the quiet garden from old tales. During their quest, they find numerous

classic artworks that portray famous journeyers and come to a surprising conclusion.

CRITICAL ANALYSIS

Husted writes this heart warming story of two cats that are on a quest to a place where the “grass is

greener” the quiet garden. As the old tales say, the quiet garden seems like a magical, peaceful place

that welcomes cats. This story captures the innocence of cats and how they just want a peaceful place

with plenty of food. This story portrays cats in a different light, with them being innocent, determined,

when in reality cats are known for being cold, lazy, and privileged. These cats will open your heart.

Husted’s illustrations are light and carefree, symbolizing the cats. The caption bubbles help translate

the characters’ emotions. I recommend this easy to read graphic novel for readers with a love for cats.

REVIEW EXCERPT(S)

“Works equally well as simple animal tale, metaphysical journey, or reimagining of classic artworks.”

– Kirkus Reviews

"A book that can be read on many levels and enjoyed by a wide range of readers, this is a beautiful

reminder that there’s a seed of truth in every story."

– Booklist (starred review)

“Husted delivers a thought-provoking exploration of the power of storytelling wrapped up in a

charming cat package. Sure to spur discussion on how we envision and interpret stories.”

– School Library Journal

CONNECTIONS

“Husted’s debut captures picturesque Mediterranean landscapes, and thin line art highlights the

scrawny strength and fragility of the feline strays. Full of fun and whimsy, the story also reminds

a heartfelt truth: “scraps aren’t so bad when you have a friend to share them with.”

– Publishers Weekly

I recommend this easy to read graphic novel for readers with a love for cats.
